6/22: Jivamukti Workshop with Bristol

Finding Balance — Celebrating the Summer Solstice

This Jivamukti Yoga Workshop will focus on balancing — don’t worry, we won’t
spend the whole time on one foot! Instead we’ll move through our asana practice
with the intention of finding our balance in this time of transition. When we
find our balance in the physical body, it manifests as ease in the emotional,
mental, spiritual and energetic bodies. As we move past the summer solstice, the
longest day of the year, we start to shift back towards retreating inwards. It
is a time to enjoy summer’s bounty and also begin to cultivate an inward focus
that will nurture us as we move through summer and fall.

We will begin with a creative and dynamic flow of standing postures before
investigating some different ways of balancing on our feet, head and hands. Then
we’ll bring balance to the hips and lower back with a quieter series of
hip-openers and back-bends. We’ll finish with a guided meditation to internalize
the work we’ve done.

This class is appropriate for all levels except new beginners. However, come
with an open mind and a ready smile as we will purposefully and playfully
challenge the body.

Bristol Maryott is a certified Jivamukti and prenatal yoga instructor with over
eight years of experience teaching. Bristol’s Jivamukti vinyasa classes incorporate hands-on
assists and vigorous flows as well as quieter restorative postures and meditation
practices. She draws strongly on the tenets of Jivamukti as well as her studies of the
Ashtanga, Anusara and Iyengar yoga methods. Bristol”s practice and teaching is informed by the
light and grace of her teachers, Sharon Gannon and David Life. Bristol also pursues a
career in art history and is passionate about animal welfare.

What is Medical Chi Gong?
Medical Chi Gong is an effective compilation of preventive, healing and strengthening exercises derived from about 6,000 years of the Chinese people’s experiences studying the body. As early as the Shang Dynasty (1766-1123 B.C.), there were drawings vividly representing the movement we call Chi Gong today. Another testament to it’s age, the oldest Chinese medical text, the Yellow Emperor’s Internal Classic (722-480 B.C.), presents theories and methods for medical Chi Gong training.

Two of the most significant reasons for the practice of Medical Chi Gong are to achieve longevity and higher quality of life. Long life has been a major concern of mankind for eons and it is a major subject of modern medical research. Since Medical Chi Gong offers proven theory and training methods, it would be wise for modern society to study and research it. But first, modern society must reach an understanding of internal energy (Chi), which is still new to it. In the west, it is only in the last decade that Chi is beginning to be understood as bio-energy.

Rejuvenation of bio-energy or Chi is the main focus of our Medical Chi Gong program. Zen Wellness members realize many benefits such as recovery of ambulatory skills, and increased balance and coordination. Our program is recommended by many physicians and is an important part of a total wellness program. (zenwellness.com)
